Physicals Q & A

What are sports physicals?

Sports physicals or pre-participation physical examinations are required by most states before a student athlete can participate in sports programs. A sports physical consists of a medical history review and a physical exam to determine if the student is in good health before the sports season begins.

At the end of the sports physical, the examining doctor from My Urgent Care Clinic will fill out the form required by the student’s school or sports organization for participation eligibility or refer the student for additional testing as needed.

What happens during a sports physical?

A pre-participation physical takes about 45 minutes and involves a medical history review, including any prior injuries or incidents to identify underlying diseases or issues that may cause challenges for athletes.

The second part of a sports physical involves a physical exam to ensure the different parts of the body are working as they should. The doctors at My Urgent Care Clinic may recommend an appointment with a primary care doctor or specialist if any health concerns are noted during the exam.

What is a DOT exam?

A DOT exam is required for employees working in safety-sensitive roles for the Department of Transportation. If your employment can impact your safety or the public’s, you will be required to have a physical to ensure that you are in good health to complete the duties of your position.

What is covered in a DOT exam?

DOT exams are comprehensive and include vision and hearing testing, blood pressure measurements, a urinalysis, and a complete physical exam involving:

  • Mouth and throat
  • Heart
  • Lungs and chest
  • Abdomen
  • Extremities
  • Spine and musculoskeletal system
  • Neurological

What are pre-employment exams?
